Let's play Star Ocean 3! Part 11
Sep. 14th, 2020 03:33 amWe start a cutscene as soon as we enter Arias.

Nel: Yes, that happened during the Airyglyph attack.
Cliff: Wow, they did a lot of damage.
Nel: The large mansion in the middle of the town is our base of operations here.
Nel: We'll check in there first.
We can visit around town a little before heading to the mansion. The townspeople are generally relieved to see Nel again, and are friendly towards us. A number of them are injured or worried, and several are considering evacuating the town in an attempt to stay safe, while others proudly stay in a show of defiance. Some complain about how food has gotten more expensive and more scarce, but the bakery here looks to be in much better shape than the grocer was back in Airyglyph.
Once we're done chatting around, we can head into the mansion conference room to meet up with Nel's colleagues.

Female Runologist: They will arrive in three days.

Female Soldier: Yes, ma'am.
Female Commander: Nice work, all. You are relieved.
Both Runologists: Yes ma'am.

Nel: I'm fine. I see you still worry too much.
Clair: It's only because you're too reckless. If you don't want me to worry about you, try being a little more careful.
Nel: That's the line of work I'm in. It can't be helped.
Clair: That may be so, still...
Clair: Are these the ones?
Nel: That's right. They're engineers from Greeton.
Nel: They're still reluctant to help us.
Clair: I see...
Clair: I'm Commander Clair Lasbard of the Aquaria Runological Unit. I'm honored to meet you.
Cliff: The name's Cliff Fittir.
Fayt: I'm Fayt Leingod. Nice to meet you.
Clair: I must apologize for forcing our problems on you. However... you must understand our situation.
Cliff: I think we understand.
Fayt: But, I'm not sure-
Clair: I would like to hear what you have to say, and I will provide a thorough explanation of our situation as well. But, you must be exhausted. Why don't we continue this tomorrow? You need your rest.
Nel: That's right... He may seem fine now, but Fayt is still under the weather.
Fayt: I'm fine.
Cliff: Hey, never pass up a chance to take it easy, kid.
Cliff: It was a real trek crossing those mountains.
Fayt: Okay, okay.
Clair: There's a guest room upstairs on the second floor. Please feel free to use it. Nel, stay behind. We have much to discuss.
Nel: Right.

Fayt: Yeah, and the view's pretty good, too.
Cliff: I'll rest up first. Take a stroll and come back whenever you feel like it.
Fayt: Will do.
We're given another opportunity to walk around and chat. Cliff is staying in our room again, and Nel's down in the conference room. We're just going to go to sleep but some of them say slightly different things than earlier so I'll cover that in extras.
Cliff: Well? You gonna go to sleep now?
[If we choose I'm getting kinda sleepy.]
Fayt: I'm getting kinda sleepy. The sun's still out, but I think I'll get some extra sleep in preparation for tomorrow.
Cliff: That's what I'd hoped you'd say. I don't want you collapsing and making all sorts of trouble for me.
Fayt: I'm not a rough-and-tumble guy like you, Cliff.

Nel enters the room, stares for a moment, then bows and walks back out.

Fayt: I was probably just worn out.
Cliff: Glad to hear that! I have a feeling things are gonna get hectic today.
Fayt: ... Why do you say that? How do you know?
Cliff: Just... a hunch.
Fayt: Oh, we know all about those...
Cliff: Funny guy.
When we talk to the runologist just outside our room, she says Clair's waiting for us in the conference room. We could talk to everyone in town again, but let's humor her for now.

Clair: Did you sleep well?
Cliff: Yes, thank you kindly.
Clair: I'm glad to hear it.
Clair: Right, let us begin the negotiations.
Clair: Please, sit anywhere you like.

Clair: She had other duties to attend to.
Fayt: What?
Clair: Don't worry, I'm taking over her duties as far as you two are concerned.
Fayt: Well, all right...
Clair: Let's begin.

Clair: but you may provide us with your answer at that point.
Cliff: Wow, you're really bending over backwards to meet us halfway. You should've heard Nel!
Clair: Nel is very frank. Although she is extremely skilled, as I am sure you have noticed, she tends to be rather inflexible at times. It can be... problematic.
Cliff: Yeah, I know the type: mission, mission, always the mission.
Clair: To be honest, I, too, would like you to work for us, but I realize this is not your war. Our deaths, and the life of our country, are not in your hands - you need feel no obligation, and we have no right to force you to help.
Cliff: Now you're making me feel guilty.
Clair: It is only the truth. At least, we thank our blessings you did not fall into Airyglyph's hands.
Cliff and Clair look at Fayt.
Cliff: So what do you wanna do? It looks like they'll let us go after we reach Aquios, anyway.

Fayt: No, it's nothing...
Clair: If you have any questions, I will answer to the best of my abilities.
Fayt: All right, then I'll ask. What is Nel's new mission?
Clair: Why would you ask that? She is no longer your concern.
Fayt: She told us her mission was to take both of us safely to the royal city! How could she just leave us here-
Clair: To you, it appears that she has abandoned her mission?
Fayt: Well... yes. I didn't know her long, but I got the impression that she would never leave a mission incomplete.

Clair: Well, she...
Cliff: She went to rescue Tynave and Farleen, didn't she?
Fayt: What?
Female Soldier: Lady Clair, is this true?
Clair: Why would you think that?
Cliff: Last night... She came to our room.
Fayt: Huh? When?
Cliff: While you were snoring like a babe.
Cliff: I was wondering what she wanted, but all she did was bow and leave without saying a word.
Cliff: I was pretending to be asleep, so I don't think she realized I was watching her.
Cliff: It makes sense, though, considering the situation. That's probably what you overheard them talking about in Kirlsa.
Fayt: Is that true, Clair? I can't believe it!
Clair: Yes. It is... She left to rescue Tynave and Farleen.
Fayt: If you knew what she was doing, why didn't you stop her!?
Cliff: We all got our missions: mine's to bring you back to our leader. And I stick to my missions.
Fayt: But...!
Clair: All right. I will explain.

Clair: They told us that the two women are hostages, and they demanded you in exchange. This is not possible... So she went to rescue them.
Fayt: But... All by herself...?
Clair: That's Nel for you.
Female Soldier: Why didn't she tell us!? We'd have gone with her!!!
Clair: Perhaps because the odds of her success are essentially zero.
Clair: She'll likely walk into an Airyglyph trap.
Clair: I tried to stop her, but... there was no way. Nel would never abandon those who work for her.
Cliff: She pretends to be all business, but she's the type that can't let go.
Clair: At any rate, that is our situation. Please do not worry about Nel. We must hurry on to Aquios. Although this is a relatively safe area, nowhere is completely safe.
Fayt: Where'd they demand it take place?
Clair: Why do you want to know that?
Fayt: I can't let her do this. Her life is more valuable than that. Do people think the only way to end this war is to throw away their own lives?
Fayt: I'm going after Nel. I have a few words to say to her!
Fayt stands up and Cliff immediately does the same.
Cliff: All right Fayt! I was waiting for you to say that.
Clair: I cannot allow this! Nel told us of your skills, but this enemy is too strong, even for you!
Cliff: Hmph, don't worry about us. I don't kno wwhat she told you, but we can fend for ourselves! And besides, when he gets riled up like this, Fayt can get even nastier than Nel. He's the most stubborn, hardcore kid around.
Clair: In that case... I'll send some soldiers with you.
Cliff: No need.
Cliff: We'll just be asking for them to spot us if we march in there with an army. We'll be more maneuverable in small numbers. And... I doubt you can spare the guards, given your situation.
Clair: That's true, but...

Clair: A building on the southeastern side of Kirlsa. It was originally constructed as a training facility, but now they execute people there. It's also the base of the heavy cavalry Black Brigade - one of Airyglyph's three military units.
Cliff: How do we get there?
Clair: Return to Kirlsa, then follow the road from the south gate of the city and you'll find it. I think you'll get there faster if you avoid the mountain road you took before, and take the south gate from Arias, head across the wilderness, and enter Kirla from that direction.
Cliff: Got it.
Fayt: We in this together?
Cliff: Of course.
Clair: Please, wait a moment.

Cliff: Leave it to us.
Fayt: Don't worry, we'll bring them home. Forgive me if I give Nel a good smack for this.
And we're off back to Kirlsa, whoop whoop! Thankfully no backtracking though since we're going through the hills route and not the mountain route.

This region is a bit weird because the half of it close to Arias is called "Aire Hills" but the half of it close to Kirlsa is called "Kirlsa Hills", but they both correspond to the same map. The Aire Hills part has more natural enemies like wolves and the Kirlsa side has Storm Brigade riders that are significantly less trivial to fight. We get across easily enough though.
Once back in Kirlsa, most of the townspeople are talking about how they've heard that two spies were captured and are to be executed. They reactions to that range from morbid excitement, to worried relief, or upset (when they hear the spies are very young). Kirlsa contains multitudes. As per usual, we could also run all the way back to Airyglyph again if we wanted, but as with before I'm going to keep that for the extras. I just like pointing it out because there are so many points in this game where you can just run all the way back to Airyglyph when you're absolutely not meant to, and not only are you not penalized for it, but you get extra little dialogue chunks you'll never hear otherwise. I kind of love it honestly.
Next time: we head for the Kirlsa Training Facility to go rescue Nel!

Nel: Yes, that happened during the Airyglyph attack.

Farleen: Uh... Uuh...
Tynave: What- What are you doing here!?

Albel: So, you've heard of me.
