Let's play Star Ocean 3! Extras 1
Sep. 9th, 2020 11:54 amSo, now that we've landed on Vanguard III, let's go on a tiny tangent for a minute or twenty. Like I mentioned earlier in the LP, this game has a lot of NPC dialogue, and I mean a LOT. And a lot of those NPCs are persistent and have their own mini-arcs if we talk to them every opportunity we get (and sometimes go out of our way to talk to them at times where you wouldn't expect them to have anything new to add). So, with that, here's our first "extra" update where I'll go over the NPCs we met in the hotel and evacuated alongside, since we won't be seeing any of them for the next couple hours.
This doesn't cover Sophia's extra dialogue because there's a LOT of it, no descriptions of items/consoles we can interact with, and I'm also not going to cover any dictionary terms because there's a lot of those very fast (and for every other term you look up it unlocks new terms, so the work piles up super fast). If there's any terms people are curious to see, I can either link a transcript of all dictionary terms (which WILL contain major spoilers so I would advise only using ctrl-F in it for the terms you want), or I can cover some major terms people are curious about. Your call!
Anyway, I'll be covering these NPC-by-NPC, because that makes it a lot easier to follow what they're saying. Some of these are more interesting than others, but I'm putting them all here anyway, feel free to gloss over the ones that don't seem to interest you. I'm including dolphin boy here (again) despite him already being in the main updates because I think he rules. If you disagree that's okay you can just scroll past him again.
There's 7 different story triggers to unlock new dialogue until we leave in the escape pod:
(1) just, the original dialogue when you start playing
(2) after playing in the battle simulator
(3) after escaping to the evacuation shelter
(4) after sleeping at the evacuation shelter
(5) after moving to the transport ship
(6) after being told to evacuate
(7) after everyone else has evacuated (Rossettis only)

I expect to see you at the show. Okay, Fayt?

Hurry up and go? So you're saying you guys are staying here?
We're waiting for my mama and papa. If we leave now, we'll miss them, won't we?
But forget about us. What about you guys, Fayt? Why are you still here? Whether you're gonna evacuate or trying to find somebody, you better get a move on.
Yeah, Fayt. We should go find your mom and dad right away.
You're right. Whether we try to find my parents first or just evacuate immediately, the situation's gonna worse the longer we take. Okay, let's hurry, Sophia.

And that's it for the notable recurring NPCs in this first chunk of the game o/ There's a handful of lines from other characters that aren't in here but they're less relevant/interesting for the most part. I can include them later if someone really wants.
Featherfolk Boy
(1, in his hotel room)
This planet is really so peaceful. When I'm here, it's hard to believe that Federation forces are battling the Aldian Empire near Lambda Sector at this very moment.
(3, lying in a bed in room 502)
Ouch... Somebody stepped on my wing when we were running down here. Argh! Ooooouuch...
I'm really zoning out now. Should I be worried about this?
I'm really zoning out now. Should I be worried about this?
(4, lying in a bed in room 502)
What a relief. It looks like we're finally going to be saved. Ah man... Now that I'm not panicking anymore, all of a sudden I'm really sleepy.
Elderly Roakian
(1, in a room south of the lounge)
Oh, so you came all the way from the Sol System, did you? Sightseeing I suppose? Well, whatever your business, easy-does-it's the way to go.
(1, if you interact with the terminal next to him)
Lots of games an elementary school kid would enjoy are installed.
(I wonder if that old man over there plays these games?)
(I wonder if that old man over there plays these games?)(3, in room 508)
Hmph. I never thought something like this would happen.
This is horrible. Why would the gods allow such a cruel thing to happen to an old man like me? I'm not long for this world anyway!
This is horrible. Why would the gods allow such a cruel thing to happen to an old man like me? I'm not long for this world anyway!
(4, in room 508)
This farce is the work of the Vendeeni!? But they aren't enemies of the Pangalactic Federation. Or are they? What the heck is going on here?
I know the Vendeeni are not on particularly friendly terms with the Pangalactic Federation. Still, the relationship between the two powers never seemed anywhere near as bad as this.
I know the Vendeeni are not on particularly friendly terms with the Pangalactic Federation. Still, the relationship between the two powers never seemed anywhere near as bad as this.
(5, in the lounge)
Are we really out of danger? We can't be sure until we reach a safe sector.
Fox Tail Girl
(1, at the beach)
The whole idea of coming to a resort planet is to stretch out your tail and relax. But my friend has got her mind set on hooking up with a hot guy. I can't figure out why she had to come all the way to Hyda just to do that.
(1, after the PA with the Flirt)
Let me fill you in... She came here to find a guy, but she's trying too hard. She's got her mind set on finding some hot guy so she can get her money's worth out of this trip. But that's making her too aggressive. Guys don't like that.
(3, in room 503)
What a pain. Do we really have to live down here? *sigh* I guess it'll be okay if I act like I'm at camp.
The bed's too hard and we have to share rooms. No tennis courts and even no showers. Yummy cakes and tea are out of the question. I have to be honest. I really can't take much more of this. I wonder how quickly they can get us outta here.

(4, in room 503)
They sent help for us sooner than I thought they would. Oh well, that's the Pangalactic Federation for you. A fast response time is everything.
I kind of wish they didn't send help so quickly. This was pretty fun. You know, like being at a camp.

(5, in the lounge)
Hyda IV was all covered in flames. We were really lucky to survive.
(6, in the escape pod crowd)
I guess it goes without saying, but it sure is crowded here. I wonder if there's anyone here who's good at making people get into line?
Flirt
(1, at the beach) this is a full-on PA as described in part 1
(1, after the PA)
What do you want!? I'm not interested in guys that come with strings attached. Do me a favor - make like Houdini and disappear.
(3, in room 503)
I can't take this anymore. I'm gonna die, aren't I!?
I don't want to die just yet. Please, someone, anyone. You've got to rescue us!
I don't want to die just yet. Please, someone, anyone. You've got to rescue us!
(4, in room 503)
Did you hear? What a relief... We're saved!
Hey, we're saved! Come on, I know you can look happier than that!
Hey, we're saved! Come on, I know you can look happier than that!
(5, in the lounge)
How long are we gonna have to be like this? Some of these guys have wandering eyes.
(6, in the escape pod crowd)
I can't believe it! Why are they letting mothers and children go ahead of me!?
Male Blue Dolphin
(1, at the beach)
You do not surf? Once I rest a spell, I shall hit the waves again as you people like to say.
(3, in room 508)
The beach is calling out to me!
(4, in room 508)
There's nothing for it but to swim the sea of space!
(5, in the lounge)
And now we find ourselves washed into outer space. I cannot leave this salt water behind.
(6, in the escape pod crowd)
No, no, no. I don't need an escape pod. Can't you just let me through? I just want to take my board and go out for a little swim. I'm serious!
My skin can withstand the vacuum, so go ahead and toss me out the air-lock if you want to.
My skin can withstand the vacuum, so go ahead and toss me out the air-lock if you want to.
Expelian Male
(1, outside the lounge)
I heard the rumors but... I really didn't think there'd be this many Earthlings here. Huh!? Me? I'm from Expel... Now I'm starting to feel like I'm in the Sol System.
Just a moment ago, this kid who was walking by greeted me with a 'Heya pops.' What do you think? Do I really look that old? I thought Expelians were supposed to look younger than their actual ages when compared with other races.

(3, in room 502)
Does anyone else have an injury? Actually, it's not much, but I can work a little rejuvenation symbology of my own.
Ah! Hey, you're a little bit hurt there, yourself. How's that? You feel a little better now, right?
I'm worried about that Featherfolk guy over there. I'm no expert, so I can't be sure, but I think maybe his broken bone is damaging an artery, or a lung... It's all I can do to staunch the bleeding. He could be in serious trouble if we don't get him to a hospital soon.

(4, in room 502)
Whew, what a relief. I'm tired of traveling. As far as I'm concerned, nothing beats good ol' Expel.
(5, in the lounge)
Whew, I'm exhausted. I didn't get enough sleep in the evacuation facility. I really need a good night's sleep.
(6, on the upper deck, away from the escape pod crowd)
I mean, I don't want to die just yet, but that doesn't mean I want to survive at all costs, either... Know what I mean? If I have to die now, I'd at least like to go out with a little style.
Pretentious Earthling
(1, outside the lounge)
On top of the Aldian Empire's forces, now we have to worry about the forces from Vendeen too. Both seem to be hurriedly on the move these days. Those Vendeeni seem to be on to something. I bet they're trying to counter the moves being made by the Aldian Empire.
Well, even if the Aldian Empire attacks the Pangalactic Federation, Commodore Wittcomb's unit stationed at Remote Station #6 will repulse them just like they always do.
Well, even if the Aldian Empire attacks the Pangalactic Federation, Commodore Wittcomb's unit stationed at Remote Station #6 will repulse them just like they always do.
(3, in room 507)
Those weapons they were carrying... Do you think that maybe it could have been the Vendeeni? But if it was, what could they possibly want?
If it wasn't the Vendeeni, then who the heck could it have been? Hmm...
If it wasn't the Vendeeni, then who the heck could it have been? Hmm...
(4, in room 508)
So it really was the Vendeeni? I don't get it... Where did they get that much firepower? They shouldn't have enough battalions to spare for an attack on a planet like this one.
What were they thinking? Why would they attack a powerful government like the Aldian Empire on one side, and the Pangalactic Federation on the other? What's so important about a resort planet like this that they would take so much risk just to attack it?

(5, on the stairs up to the bridge)
Pretentious Earthling: Hey, you. What's the big idea, letting the Vendeeni forces get this far? Maybe it happened during nap time on Remote Station #7?
Federation Petty Officer: I'm sorry, but this particular incident is currently under investigation.
Pretentious Earthling: What are you trying to pull? Do you have any idea who I am!?
Federation Petty Officer: No matter who you are, I cannot say anything more at this time. Please, return to the lounge.
Pretentious Earthling: Don't you play games with me! Bah! Talking to you is a waste of time. Get me the captain! I want to speak with the captain!
Federation Petty Officer: I'm afraid I can't do that. As long as the captain is the commanding officer aboard this ship, his orders are absolute. My orders from the captain state that I am not to allow civilians to enter any area but the lounge, for any reason.
Pretentious Earthling: What!? You blithering idiot! I'll remember you! I'll use my influence to get you canned the second I arrive on Remote Station #6!
Federation Petty Officer: Be my guest.
Pretentious Earthling: Hmph! You'll regret this!
The Pretentious Earthling turns around, to where Fayt is standing.
Pretentious Earthling: Get out of my sight!

(5, after seeing the above scene)
I can't believe this. They might say that we're far from enemy forces here, but the Federation military is still to blame for letting this surprise attack happen. *grumble*
(6, in the escape pod crowd)
Why won't you let me on first!? Do you have any idea what a devastating loss to the Federation it would be if I died!?
Kiosk Clerk
(1, in the lounge)
The games in our hotel are all realistic full-body simulations. I myself prefer the old type of games where you use a joystick. I think I'll have a word with the supplier.
(2, still in the lounge)
W-w-what... What's going on!? I didn't know the Pangalactic Federation had any enemies in this region! Whoever said a part-time job on a resort planet would be a breeze was full of it!
(2, as you leave the lounge)
Oh no... Wh-what am I gonna do... No, I gotta relax, relax. First of all, I got to get away from here.
(3, in room 502)
Arrgggh! What is the Federation army doing!? This is negligence, I tell you. Negligence!
Hey, is this room hot? Is the air conditioner working?
Hey, is this room hot? Is the air conditioner working?
(4, in room 502)
What's keeping them? They're taking forever. What could be so hard about taking on a wimpy army like those Vendeeni!?
(5, in the lounge)
What was keeping them? They took forever to get us. What were those Remote Station #7 guys doing?
Young Earthling
(1, in the lounge)
D'oh! Jeez! That character's too strong. This's gotta be a bug, right? Whatdaya think? I mean, Michael is way too strong. They gotta get rid of him already!
D'oh! Jeez! Maybe I should change characters... I think I'll try Lucy. But then again, her summoning attack is really weak.
D'oh! Jeez! Maybe I should change characters... I think I'll try Lucy. But then again, her summoning attack is really weak.
(2, still in the lounge)
Huh? What!? You mean it's for real!? Oh man! It's just like in the movies.
A war means we'll be able to see a real battle-class ship, right? That's way cool!
A war means we'll be able to see a real battle-class ship, right? That's way cool!
(3, in room 501)
Wow! It was a beam! A real beam! I've never seen a real beam before!
(4, in room 501)
Yahoo! I get to ride on a real battleship. I gotta tell everybody about this after I get back to Earth!
(5, before entering the lounge)
Wow! We're on a real Federation spaceship!
Too bad this is just a little transport ship. I wanted to go on a battle-class ship.

(5, in the hallway)
The planet was so pretty... all those twinkling red lights.
Female Earthling
(1, in the lounge)
Honestly, that son of mine... I just wish he'd study a little more instead of playing games all the time. Except for P.E., his grades are terrible because of it.
So what's so interesting about games anyway? Honestly... *grumble*
So what's so interesting about games anyway? Honestly... *grumble*
(2, still in the lounge)
Oh dear, we're under attack? So, what now!? What should we do?
What's going on!? The travel agency assured me that Hyda was perfectly safe.
What's going on!? The travel agency assured me that Hyda was perfectly safe.
(3, in room 501)
Why did this have to happen? And I was on vacation, too.
(4, in room 501)
What a relief. We're gonna be okay.
(5, before entering the lounge)
Hey! Cut it out! Hurry up and go inside.
(5, in the hallway)
When I think about what we've just been through, I can't stop shaking. I still can't believe I made it through that alive.
Elegant Tetrageniot
(3, in room 508)
Damn them! What a mess they've made. Who are these people!?
(4, in room 508)
It's actually the Vendeeni!? Damn them! We should have wiped them out long ago. There was something decidedly suspicious about how they never seem to want to join the Pangalactic Federation. I can't believe this. This is all the Pangalactic Congress's fault...
After I return to Tetragenesis, I will see to it that my own noble House Luza declares war on our attackers. I don't care what the Suzerain of House Vectra says about it! They'll pay for this atrocity.

We were truly lucky. How many people did they mercilessly slaughter this day?
I pledge vengeance with my own hands, upon those who stole the lives of so many innocents. The punishment shall fit the crime.

(6, in the escape pod crowd)
I cannot believe this. I thought we were rescued, and now this happens!?
This is not over yet! I swear it! On the honor of the glorious House Luza, I swear vengeance!!!

I expect to see you at the show. Okay, Fayt?(1, if you interact with the barricade in her room) (PA)
No! There are tigers, bears, and other dangerous animals in there! My little babies might freak out if someone they don't know barges in.
(2, in her room) (PA)
What're you sticking around here for? Didn't you hear the announcement? We have to get outta here.
Well Fayt, I could ask you the same question. What are you doing here? Hurry up and go before it's too late.

You can't go in there! That last tremor scared the bears and lions. Who knows what they'll do if someone they don't know barges in.
Lemme fill ya in, Fayt. The only reason we're sticking around here is to keep people like you from wandering in and getting hurt.

(3, in room 509)
Cheer up, okay? Fayt?
(3, in room 509, if Fayt told her she did the wrong thing)
Hey, Fayt... This may be none of my business, but never say that you might as well be dead. I mean... I mean... If you die, then your papa and mama will feel bad. So please, try to cheer up and hang in there, just a little bit. Okay?
(3, in the hallway, if Fayt told her she did the right thing)
I'm sure your dad and mom and everybody will be okay. No question. I guarantee it.
(3, in room 509, after Sophia goes to sleep)
I still have a long way to go, myself. I mean, it's times like this when it's really my job to make people smile.
(4, in room 509)
That's great. That's such a relief. Now people are really starting to smile again.
Argh... Today's performance was supposed to be my debut. I guess that'll have to be put on hold, too.
Argh... Today's performance was supposed to be my debut. I guess that'll have to be put on hold, too.
(5, in the hallway)
I looked at Hyda just before this ship entered gravitic warp. It was all covered in red... How many people... how many dreams were swallowed in those flickering lights?
(6, on the lower deck)
Me and the rest of the troupe will get on last. I just don't want to be separated from them, no matter what.
(7)
What!? Everyone's on board already? I guess that means our turn is after Fayt and Sophia's turn.
Piccolotto
(1, in his and Dulcinea's hotel room, as "Short Man")
Short Man: What are you doing, barging in like that? Is something wrong, young man?
Oh, sorry. I was just...
Short Man: Oh, don't worry. I wasn't chastising you. Enthusiasm and curiosity are essential for young people. No doubt you sometimes feel that you just can't sit still.
Uhh... Umm... You don't say?
Short Man: I do! Why, that's how I was when I was young.
Short Man: By the way... This is a bit off the subject, but are you busy tomorrow? Come on, I'm sure you have some free time. After all, this is a resort! Right? Right? Right? Right?
Well... I don't have anything planned in particular.
Short Man: Of course you don't! In that case, you gotta go see the show. And of course... Don't forget to tell your family about it. It'll be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, no doubt.
Short Man: The shows at this hotel are absolutely fabulous. I'm sure tomorrow's show will be no exception. It's a must see! No, really - it's the truth.

(3, in room 509)
You don't know for sure yet that your parents aren't safe and sound. I wouldn't be so pessimistic if I were you, myself.
(3, in room 509, after Sophia goes to sleep)
Even at times like this... No, I should say 'especially' at times like this, people like us are necessary, you know?
(4, in room 509)
My, oh yes. What a relief. We won't be able to make it in time for our Iruba performance, but we should be able to make up for it with the profit from our next Moonbase performance.
But oh, my, I have to admit. This really has thrown a monkey wrench into our cash-flow situation. My, oh my...
But oh, my, I have to admit. This really has thrown a monkey wrench into our cash-flow situation. My, oh my...
(5, in the hallway)
The more I think about it, the worse it seems. Why did it have to come to this?
(6, on the lower deck)
It's no good being too leisurely, but panicking is no better. I've decided that we'll go last.
(7)
Time for us to make our escape. It's true what they say - time is money.
Dulcinea
(1, in her and Piccolotto's hotel room, as "Attractive Woman")
Oh, hello there. You're those youngsters from next door, aren't you? Can I do something for you?
(1, once you've talked to Piccolotto)
Tomorrow's show will be a circus. You should go see it if you are the least bit interested. Of course if you're not, there's no sense in forcing yourself to go.
(3, in room 509)
Anyway, now is the time for rest. I can't think straight when my head's tired.
(3, in room 509, after Sophia goes to sleep)
I know it's rough, but you're still a man. Look around you, and support people who need it. You got that?
(4, in room 509)
That'll do just fine. Seeing the smiles of those around us is the greatest joy we in the Rossetti Troupe know.
(5, in the hallway)
The saddest part about it all is that it was all real. It wasn't a dream.
(6, on the lower deck)
This troupe is one big family. We'll live or die together.
(7)
Well, I guess we're last? We'd better get ready to leave, then.
Quantestorie
(1, outside the lounge, as "Slanted Man")
Well, well... Greetings, fair princess and blue-haired knight who attends her. The door that lies beyond is a gateway to evil that has been sealed by a holy man. Beyond the sealed door lurks an evil beast of chaos that would seek to inflict harm upon the princess. Though it may be my end, my appointed task is to protect these lands against the forces of chaos that would disturb the order of this world. Thence, the door shall remain sealed until the glass fills with water and all the moons have waned. O princess of pure heart who shimmers like sunlight on water. O knight of valor who conceals the flames of rage within. You must hear and understand what I say.
By decree of the heavens, the hour of doom shall be on the morrow's eve. Do not forget.
By decree of the heavens, the hour of doom shall be on the morrow's eve. Do not forget.
(2, outside the lounge)
Perhaps this is the wrath of the Heavens? Or perhaps the furor of the Daemonium? *sigh* Either way, the performance shall have to be cancelled now.
Our princess and her chivalrous knight must seek safety at once. I have the mournful, yet important mission of laying to rest the evil beasts lurking in the depths of imprisonment.
Our princess and her fair knight are safe, I see. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Quantestorie, grand storyteller of the ages. If we do not meet our doom here in these halls, you may yet have the chance to see me perform.
There is no need to worry. For even if our foe is the Lord of Daemonium, it shall not be easy to halt my voice nor these rapidly moving legs!

Defeating the evil ones and saving those who are captured - these are the prerogatives of the hero. If you are truly a hero, then victory will fall into your hands of its own accord. On the other hand, if you are not, then that is proof that your parents have not been captured. Either way, you have nothing to worry about.
(4, in room 505)
O gallant youth, when mortal peril strikes, turn to the beauteous water pixies. The women shall come to receive the life of beautiful goddess, and shall provide sanctuary. The young knight shall succeed in falling upon the promised land, where it is said that the chosen ones are to gather.
(5, in the hallway)
Helre, a shining, glorious light of hope, here to rescue the young knight from the clutches of the evil Vendeeni archfiend. The scintillating light shreds the darkness, passes secretly through the void, and carries the young knight and the princess to the promised land.
(6, on the lower deck)
At the very moment the princess and the young knight attempt to set foot in the promised land, a messenger of the archfiend arrives. The sharp claws of the Vendeeni slash ruthlessly! However... There's nothing to worry about. Whatever evil they might plot, as everyone knows, it's the knight, valiant defender of the princess, who must win in the end.
(7)
No story can be spun without a hand on the spinning wheel. Anyway, let us prepare to take our leave.
Gonnella
(1, in Peppita's room)
Don't you worry, my lad. Our little invincible missy here will take on any foe!
(2, in Peppita's room)
I don't wanna die in such a place.
(3, in room 509)
For now, we'll just have to improvise. We need to make just enough seed money at our next performance to open a circus.
(4, in room 505)
It's a rescue ship from the Pangalactic Federation. A lifeline, at last!
(5, in the hallway)
Why did they have to attack while we, the Rossetti Troupe, were here? I'll just have to grill each and every Vendeeni I can find, and make them all apologize for three days and three nights each!
I wonder why they attacked a resort planet like Hyda IV anyway? There has to be lots of other better places to attack, like military facilities or planets with resources. Why here?

(6, on the lower deck)
Argh! I don't wanna die. I really don't wanna die. No matter what happens, I won't die.
(7)
No matter how bad our luck is, everything will be okay for at least as long as it takes for me to escape. I guarantee it.
Ursus
(1, in Peppita's room)
The lil' lady practices late into the evening each adn every day. She practices more than anyone. So, I'm sure she'll be fine this time too.
(2, in Peppita's room)
The Circus Master will come. I know he will. So we're staying put right here.
(3, standing to the side in room 509)
Big. Get in way. I stay off to side.
(3, in the hallway, if Fayt told Peppita she did the right thing)
Everyone is okay. The gods, they are watching.
(4, in room 505)
Oh, a relief. Okay now.
(5, in the hallway)
I'll get them. Those evil guys. I'll get them for sure.
(6, on the lower deck)
... Tell the truth. Little scared. But, to be alone, is more scary. So, I wait.
(7)
Hurry, go. The danger, it's dangerous.
And that's it for the notable recurring NPCs in this first chunk of the game o/ There's a handful of lines from other characters that aren't in here but they're less relevant/interesting for the most part. I can include them later if someone really wants.
